What is Light Sport Aircraft?

FAA Approved Rule as defined by the Federal Aviation Administration Document FAA-2001-11133.

The Federal Aviation Administration has recently approved a new regulation which has created a new category of aircraft that will be far less costly to manufacture and operate.

"A simple, fully built factory tested certified aircraft with a maximum gross weight of 1320 pounds, a maximum level speed of 140 MPH and a landing speed not to exceed 50 MPH"

Industry insiders predict both the initial purchase and operating costs to the consumer for this category of aircraft will come in at less than one half the cost of an aircraft produced under the old regulations.

Fully supported by the FAA and NASA, many within the industry believe this new category of aircraft will create a market expansion of enormous proportions.

"People will be buying their own planes in unprecedented numbers and thus will find a way to take command of their lives"
NASA Manager Bruce Holmes

"The LSA Rule will revolutionize General Aviation with modern aircraft that are safer and more efficient than existing light aircraft"
FAA Administrator Marion Blakely

Consensus Standards

In early 2002, EAA proposed engaging ASTM International, an independent, nonprofit, 100+-year-old test standards organization for administering consensus standards applicable to the proposed LSA rule. This unique approach is for industry-wide standards in design, manufacturing, quality assurance, flight test documentation and follow-up support. ASTM does not charge for its administration and has a long track record of helping industries develop their own standards.
